چکیده

From hot, tenuous gas dominated by Compton processes, to warm, photoionized emission-line regions, to cold, optically thick fluorescing matter, accreting gas flows in X-ray binaries span a huge portion of the parameter space accessible to astrophysical plasmas. The coexistence of such diverse states of material within small volumes (10–10 cm) leaves X-ray spectroscopists with a challenging set of problems, since all such matter produces various X-ray spectral signatures when exposed to hard X rays. Emission-line regions in X-ray binaries are characterized by high radiation energy densities, relatively high particle densities, and velocities ∼ 1000 km s−1. In this article, we describe some recent efforts to generate detailed X-ray line spectra from models of X-ray binaries, whose aims are to reproduce spectra acquired with the ASCA, Chandra, and XMM-Newton observatories. With emphasis on the global nature of X-ray line emission in these systems, the article includes separate treatments of high-mass and low-mass systems, as well as summaries of continuum spectroscopy and plasma diagnostics.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Hydrogen-Poor Disks in Compact X-Ray Binaries

We show that accretion disks in several compact X-ray binaries with hydrogen– depleted donors are likely subject to a thermal ionization instability, unless they are strongly irradiated. These disks are particularly interesting in that their MHDturbulent properties in the neutral phase may be quite different from those of standard, hydrogen–rich disks. subject headings: X-ray: stars – accretion...

Observations of accretion disks in X-ray binaries

A brief overview is given of the observations of accretion disks in X-ray binaries, discussing their geometry, their effect on the rotation period of the accreting object, their optical and X-ray spectra, time variability, and radio emission and jets. Some outstanding questions for disk theory are listed.

Accretion Rates in X–ray Bursting Sources

We present estimates for the accretion rates in 13 X–ray bursting sources which exhibit photospheric expansion, basing on theoretical models of stationary, radiatively driven winds from neutron stars. The relatively high values obtained, Ṁacc∼> 10 M⊙/yr, are in accordance with theoretical limits for unstable helium burning, and, at the same time, almost never exceed the “dynamical” limit for st...

High-resolution X-ray Spectroscopy of the Accretion Disk Corona Source 4u 1822−37

We present a preliminary analysis of the X-ray spectrum of the accretion disk corona source, 4U 1822−37, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We detect discrete emission lines from photoionized iron, silicon, magnesium, neon, and oxygen, as well as a bright iron fluorescence line. Phase-resolved spectroscopy suggests that the rec...
